Pre-operative Instructions for Patients Undergoing Intravenous

 

1. You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for six (6) hours prior to the appointment.

If you take medicine regularly such as heart medicine, blood pressure medicine, thyroid medicine, please take it with a sip of water only.

If you are a diabetic, please schedule your surgery early in the morning. Do not take your medicine for your diebetes unless instructed by our office. You may eat when you return home and check your blood sugar at that time.

2. A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, remain in the office during the procedure, and be able to drive the patient home.  The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following the anesthesia experience.

You will be given an estimated time of surgery, but please understand the office does accept emergencies from other doctors. We do our very best to stay on time, but please accept our apology now in case we run behind.

4. Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow, and low-heeled shoes. Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.

Remember we do need to take your blood pressure and start an IV.

Please take all prescriptions as directed.

Women please note: Some antibiotics may interfere with the effectiveness of your birth control pills. Please check with your pharmacist.

You will be prescribed medication to take before your surgery.

Please take the anti-inflamatory to decrease swelling. Please start this prescription the day before surgery and then again after surgery until gone.

Please take anti-biotics antibiotic to prevent any infection that may occur. Please start this prescription the day before surgery and then again after surgery. until gone.

Please use an oral rinse Perioguard to prevent infection and kill bacteria in the mouth. Please start rinsing twice daily starting 5 days before surgery. Continue using 3 days after surgery unless otherwise instructed.

If you are going to have local anesthesia (being numb) please do the following:

  • Start on medications prescribed by Dr. Schroering or Dr. Parrish one day before your surgery, unless otherwise instructed. If there is an infection currently present you may start the antibiotics two days before.
  • If you have a heart murmur, rheumatic fever, or have had a knee replaced, please let the office know so we can prescribe the proper antibiotics.
  • Follow the Post Operative instructions given to you.
  • Please ask if you have any questions.

If you are going to be sedated (going to sleep) during surgery:

Start on medications prescribed by the Doctor one day before surgery. If there is an infection currently present, you may start on antibiotics two day before.
